What You Need To Do If Your Employees Have Side Hustles

If you have young professionals working for you, chances are they have some kind of side hustle.

We are living in the gig economy so it's almost hard to avoid now, particularly for 20-somethings. Take me for example: I work full-time as a Development Director and am growing my business in my spare time. I'm not the first person to do this and definitely won't be the last, but remember these 4 things if you're concerned about what this could mean for your business.

It's additional exposure for your business.

Whether you're looking for it or not, side gigs oftentimes bring new eyes to your business. Depending on what your YoPro employee's side hustle is (and what your business is), they could be bringing new audience members or potential clients to your biz.

Your employees are learning new skills that are transferrable to their work with you.

Again, depending on the type of side hustle these YoPros have, they could be learning about skills that can help them be better in their 9-to-5. This is a win-win for everyone!

The gig economy makes it easy to have side hustles.

That's right, I'm talking about technology. YoPros can work early in the morning (me) or late at night, on weekends, etc., and schedule their work for the week or month. Tech makes it easier to work outside of normal business hours so you won't have to worry about their work interfering with yours.

Side hustles give YoPros energy outside of the office.

For those of us who like to work until all the work is done (which is never), having a side-hustle prevents burn out. In other words, if I only had my full-time job, I would get burned out more easily because I'd always be doing one job. I know it's not what older generations are used to, but putting your energy somewhere else actually makes you better in your full-time job.

Many YoPros I interview talk about side hustles, so most of this post is from overlapping feedback and advice from them. It's also from my own experience with having a side hustle and full-time job. I am very lucky that my team and organization support my efforts as a business owner, and I believe I am a stronger YoPro because of it.
