What Everyone Is Talking About: AI From A Young Professional’s Point Of View

By now, our society has seen a number of articles on artificial intelligence every day since November, when ChatGPT was released.

In recent conversations, I couldn’t help but notice how AI is viewed differently among various generations. When I spoke at a textile association this spring, I was met with many questions of fear about AI, while later that week I met with young professionals who told me what a great solution this tool is for working more efficiently and productively.

As a young professional myself, I see the incredible potential that this technology holds for transforming our world. From improving healthcare outcomes to revolutionizing transportation, AI has the power to make our lives easier, safer, and more efficient. However, as with any new technology, there are also concerns about the potential risks and unintended consequences of this new technology. We’re all likely familiar with the risk that AI could be used to automate jobs and displace workers, particularly in industries that rely heavily on routine tasks.

Since The YoPro Know is in the business of developing our future workforce, I wanted to go a bit deeper and explore the role AI will play in the future of developing young professionals, and also how each generation views AI so differently.

In a recent poll we shared with our audience – both young professionals and experienced professionals, we confirmed our theory that young professionals were primarily optimistic about AI, claiming it the “tool for our generation”, while the other half was “undecided”. From our experienced professionals, we learned that they were more “uncertain” and “wary”, with fewer claiming it was a positive tool.

As business leaders, I encourage you to take note of how your team views AI and see if it has anything to do with their generation or view on the workforce. It is a more critical time than ever before to upskill your employees and teach them to interface with ChatGPT today to prepare for tomorrow.

As young professionals in the field of AI and the future leaders of our workforce, it is our responsibility to address these concerns and ensure that AI is developed and deployed in a responsible and ethical manner. This means being mindful of the potential risks and unintended consequences of AI, and working to mitigate these risks through careful design and testing.

It also means being proactive in advocating for policies and regulations that promote the responsible development and deployment of AI. This might include advocating for transparency and accountability in AI systems, as well as ensuring that AI is used to benefit society as a whole, rather than just a select few.

Additionally, we’ll talk about this more in future posts, but let’s also talk about the elephant in the room. ChatGPT will impact entry level jobs and who are in these positions? Primarily young professionals. Without getting them the tools they need now and training them to utilize AI functions, their “starter jobs” will be transformed and their access to leadership will continue to be skewed.

Ultimately, the future of AI is in our hands. When we see the future of AI, we know that the current millennial and GenZ workers in this space will be impactful for years to come, and it’s our job to understand how we can utilize this tool for our benefit, not our detriment.

Young professionals believe they have an opportunity to shape the development and deployment of this technology in a way that benefits society as a whole. By working together and staying mindful of the potential risks and unintended consequences of AI, we can ensure that this technology is used to create a better, more equitable world for all.
