At this point, everyone is likely fatigued after seeing “Gen Z-this, Gen Z-that” in the news daily. A recent article about business leaders’ dissatisfaction with Gen Z caught my attention—but not because it’s the first I’ve seen on the topic. In fact, I’ve seen so many of these articles about Gen Z that I’ve almost grown numb to them.
So, what was it about this one that stood out? Frankly, it was that I felt it was time to address this debate as your Generational Expert.
As the article states, criticizing Gen Z workers for a wide variety of faults has become popular in the workplace and online. But let’s be honest—looking critically at the “new kids on the block” in the workforce is nothing new. In fact, most leaders today were subject to this same scrutiny when they were entering the workforce. When my Millennial peers and I started our careers, we were the ones under the microscope (the phrase “avocado toast” still brings up memories of this time!). Now, we’re right there with the best of them, raising our eyebrows at things Gen Z says and does, forgetting that not too long ago, we were the ones on the other side.
With all of this context in mind, it’s time to pause and look this conversation squarely in the eyes so that we can sift through the viral headlines and find actionable solutions. What’s true? What’s false? And most importantly, what’s going to get your organization the results it wants?
What the Headlines Are Saying
In an excerpt from the article: “Financial-advice guru Dave Ramsey called [Gen Z] ‘just awful,’ while many hiring managers confess to ignoring them. They’ve been called out for being late, entitled, and overall not a good fit for many businesses.”
Yes, this actually happens. I wish I could tell you Gen Z is never late, never entitled, and the perfect fit for all organizations…but let’s be real. What organization has ever been a perfect fit for everyone, all the time? No generation is perfect.
The article also shares that 54% of non-Gen Z workers say the generation is lazy, with another 40% labeling them as selfish, according to a survey of thousands of workers by career website Monster. About 30% of older workers said they’d rather get a root canal than work with Gen Z colleagues, and 27% would rather work with an ex.
A root canal? That’s tough!
But here’s the thing—this disconnect is generational tension in action. It’s the clash of different communication styles, work expectations, and cultural influences. And while it might make for sensational headlines, it doesn’t have to make for dysfunctional workplaces.
The Reality Behind the Headlines
As always, a one-sided story is almost never complete. For example, surveys like the Freedom Economy Index and Monster highlight a stark contrast in perceptions. While older generations view Gen Z as lazy and entitled, Gen Z themselves report high levels of professionalism, problem-solving abilities, and strong work ethics. About 64% of Gen Z workers believe they have a strong work ethic, though only 10% of older workers agree. With such diverging views on Gen Z’s work ethic and professionalism, the reality is that the misunderstanding between Gen Z and older generations runs deep. But where is the root cause?
According to a Wake Forest University report, “Younger generations see leaders primarily as facilitators, resource providers, and coaches, rather than sources of authority or legitimate power.” Gen Z demands ethical behavior, transparency, and purpose-driven missions—qualities they often find lacking in today’s workplaces. Organizations that fail to adapt to these expectations risk losing their youngest and brightest talent. They will become your future leaders and help you understand future clients better. Keep that in mind!
Gen Z wants to be included in decision-making, have clear growth paths, and maintain flexible schedules. They value respect in leadership, with many feeling that leaders could improve their ethical behavior by treating employees with greater respect. This sentiment reflects not entitlement, but a shift in workplace values. So while at first glance, their tendencies in the workplace could be perceived as laziness, entitlement, or disrespect, it’s important to remember that most consistent traits or patterns stem from values. If you’re feeling a major disconnect between your younger coworkers (or even feeling disrespected by them), it’s probably more complicated than it seems.
Where Do We Go from Here?
So, what can you do as a leader? How can organizations move beyond the stereotypes and start seeing real results?
This is where the Talent Impact Process comes in. It’s designed to help leaders:
- Engage: Understand the unique motivators of each generation. Gen Z isn’t lazy—they’re driven differently. They value purpose, autonomy, and rapid feedback. When you align work with what drives them, you’ll see engagement soar.
- Develop: Foster environments where Gen Z can thrive. That means clear communication, opportunities for growth, and mentorship that goes both ways.
- Retain: Build cultures that respect generational differences instead of criticizing them. When people feel seen, heard, and valued, they stay.
At the end of the day, it’s not about who’s right or wrong. It’s about bridging gaps, fostering understanding, and creating workplaces where everyone—regardless of generation—can succeed, which will help you drive performance!
I encourage you to move past the headlines and start telling the real generational stories that matter.
